Nevada State Unemployment Website Redesign

Role: UI Designer

Scope: 1 Month

Tools: Miro, Figma

Context: As part of my UI/UX Bootcamp, I collaborated with a team of four to redesign Nevada's unemployment website. Our user-centered design approach involved thorough research and a high-fidelity prototype using Figma.

To achieve this, we employed a user-centered design approach that involved conducting thorough research on the user's needs, behaviors, and pain points. We then used this information to inform our design decisions and create a high-fidelity prototype using Figma.

The outcome was a successful redesign project that exceeded our expectations and showcased our newfound skills in UI/UX design, research, and collaboration. This project provided valuable experience that will be invaluable as I move forward in my career as a UI/UX designer.

Initial Analysis

Usability Heuristics Violations

  • #6: Recognition rather than recall

In order to perform the task of filing for unemployment, the website presents multiple ways on how to do so that will confuse users.

  • #7: Flexibility and efficiency of use

There is too much redundancy and information on the home page.

  • #8: Aesthetic and minimalist design

The home page is cluttered with information that overwhelms users.

Conclusion: We need to simplify.

Pamela’s Journey

Changes Needed

  1. Remove any redundant information

  2. Reduce the amount of text

  3. Create prominent call to actions

  4. Focus on the user base: Nevada residents filing for unemployment

  5. SIMPLIFY

Final Prototype

Our final project consisted of a simplified version of the initial idea. It takes into account users who are not tech-savvy and have anxieties about applying for unemployment.

Impact and What to do next…

After our presentation to mock stakeholders, we gained feedback consisting of building higher fidelity prototype, fully fleshing out the look of the required documents, and consider other color schemes.
If I had more time on this project, I’d like to explore ways to have a more polished look. I would also revisit the desktop version of the unemployment website.
